2 Region Students win awards at Intel ISEF 2016

Sedra Khan from Niles West High School received a 3rd place Grand Award of $1,000 for her project on Creating a Epigenetic Model for Alzheimer's Disease Uisng C. Elegans.
Rebecca Ann Nelson of Adalai Stevenson High School received the Monsanto Award for Innovation in Plant Sciences, First Award of $2,000.
5 students from Region 6 travelled to Intel ISEF representing Region 6 for this event.

Sarosh Nagar named a semifinalist for Broadcam Masters 2016

Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) 2015



Senior Ambria Benesch from Niles North High School won 4th place and a $500 award at the The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) this past week. Other finalists competing from the area were Kiana Lee, Senior from Niles North, Anam Furrukh and Mrugami Mahadik, both juniors from Niles West High School, and Blandon Su, a junior from Stevenson High School. Blandon Su was the recipient of a special award which is a full ride scholarship to Drexel University.


Nearly 2000 high school students from over 75 countries are given the opportunity to showcase their independent research projects and compete for over $5 million in prizes.


Intel STS Semifinalist 2015 - 2 Region 6 students were selected as one of the (top 300 students).

Reyvin Reyes Congratulations to Niles West research student Reyvin Reyes!

Reyvin Reyes was selected as one of the STS semi finalists for his research project on the Synthesis of Colicin M Using Cell-Free Protein Synthesis. Reyvin Reyes is a research student in our unique research course, STEM Inquiry & Research (SIR). SIR instructors, Ruth Gleicher and JulieAnn Villa, and Northwestern University mentor, Benjamin Des Soye, have been instrumental in supporting Reyvin and his project. We are proud to announce Reyvin Reyes as our second Intel Semifinalist from Niles West High School. In 2012, Felix Angelov was also selected as an Intel Semifinalist and was 1 of only 17 students to win Best in Category at the Intel ISEF competition.


On January 7, 300 high school seniors were named semifinalists in the Intel Science Talent Search 2015, a program of Society for Science & the Public. Each semifinalist receives a $1,000 award from the Intel Foundation with an additional $1,000 going to his or her school, resulting in $600,000 in total semifinalist awards. Semifinalists were selected from more than 1,800 entrants hailing from 460 high schools in 41 states, Puerto Rico, and five American and international high schools overseas.


On Jan. 21, 40 of the 300 semifinalists will be named Intel Science Talent Search finalists. Finalists will receive an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. from March 5-11, where they will compete for more than $1 million in awards. From this select pool, 40 finalists are then invited to Washington, DC in March to participate in final judging, display their work to the public, meet with notable scientists, and compete for three top awards of $150,000 each.

Niles North Senior Earns National Science Prize

Niles Township High School District 219 sent five students to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, held in Phoenix, AZ, and one, Hayley Sproull, earned a third place prize in Environmental Management. The Intel ISEF bills itself as the "premier global science competition for students in grades 9-12." It features 1,600 students from more than 70 countries, and showcases their talents on an international stage for scholarships and prizes.

Five District 219 students were among 1,500 of the brightest high school students in the world assembled at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair ( ISEF), the world’s premier science fair for high school students, last week in Pittsburgh, PA. District 219 sent five finalists to the competition: Felix Angelov from Niles West and, from Niles North, Ayana Jamal, Ariella Hoffman-Peterson, Haley Sproull and Elan Ness-Cohn.

Region 6 Student, Nicole Torosin, Earns Top Awards at ISEF

"Niles North High School senior Nicole Torosin received five awards at the 61st annual International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) held last weekend in San Jose, CA. Over 1,600 students from 59 countries, regions and territories competed for over $4 million in scholarships and prizes.

Torosin, who is enrolled in Student Independent Research under science teacher Jacki Naughton, received five awards totaling $13,500 for her research entitled, Drowning Out Drought: The Effect of Collision and Coalescence on Secondary Ice Multiplication in Mixed Phase Clouds.

Torosins awards included: An $8,000 First Place award from the Office of Naval Research on behalf of the United States Navy and Marine Corps; $3,000 First Place award from the Air Force Research Laboratory on behalf of the United States Air Force; $2,000 First Place award from the American Meteorological Society and $500 Fourth Place award ISEF Grand award. Torosin also received an all-expense-paid, four-week internship to the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel this summer."
